Course reserves are defined as material such as books, articles, and video used for teaching and learning in a course. These materials are for use by current UCC students only.
Course reserves, both physical and electronic (e-reserves), will be provided in a manner that respects Fair Use rights, the rights of copyright holders, copyright law, and applicable licenses.
Faculty may request that physical materials be placed on reserve in the Library for the use of their students in specific courses. Instructors may request physical materials from the Library's collection or provide personal copies. Please submit one form per course, per item.
Please use this Course Reserve Request form to let us know what textbooks need to be purchased to be placed on reserve for your students. We gather these requests at least a month before the term starts, prioritize them according to expected student usage, and then seek approval to purchase these textbooks from the ASUCC. The ASUCC funds the library within their budget to purchase these reserve textbooks for students.
If you would like a print book (non-textbook) to be purchased to be placed on reserve, please use the Library Acquisition Request form to let us know. These requests can usually be filled through the Library budget.
Course reserve textbooks are paid for by the Associated Students of UCC budget. Funding for these materials is not guaranteed, and materials will be paid for as necessary and as requested when the funds are available.
The Library budget does not provide support for course reserve textbooks. The Library can typically fill requests for standard print books (non-textbook) to be purchased and placed on reserve. Please use the Library Acquisition Request form to request the purchase of these materials and indicate that they are for use with your course.
In some instances courses require use of non-book materials (ex: specific software, science kits). The library budget does not support the cost of these materials, however, the library will support the circulation of such materials. Please use the Course Reserve Request form and indicate any information in the "Additional Comments" field.
Exceptions to these Guidelines may be approved by the Library Director.
Physical reserve materials will be made available for check-out for a limited period of time so that they can be used by other students during the term. It is up to the instructor providing the materials to designate circulation periods for materials. Standard circulation time is 3-hours per item, per student, per day. All course reserve items are for in-library use only, unless otherwise noted on the item(s) in question.
Don't forget that you can link to online eBooks, articles, reference sources, and streaming media. Find the source you want using the UCC Discovery Service box on the library home page, or go directly into the specific database to locate it. You can add the permalink to your Canvas course so that your students can access it within their course shell.
It is in the interest of all instructors and their students to use digital books and films available within the library's many online databases. This keeps costs at a minimum, allows multi-user access, and supports direct integration with the college's Learning Management System, Canvas.
For information on what digital collections are available and how to ethically use/share them see the Digital Media & eBooks Research Guide.
When linking to an eBook or article in a library database, look for the Permalink, Permanent Link, Persistent Link, Bookmark, Link to Share, or Document URL. These links will not break. (Links copied form your web browser will break!)
For example, here is a link an eBook: Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning. Here is a link to a streaming video from Films on Demand: Electron Shells: Shedding Light on Atoms.
The library will provide links to licensed, full-text versions of e-reserve material when available. E-reserves will be made available to UCC students through Canvas, requiring authentication, on a term-by-term basis.
According to Fair Use guidelines, only limited amounts of copyrighted work will be made available as e-reserves during a particular term. The UCC Library guidelines suggest book selections are limited to 15% of the book and journal selections are limited to two articles from all issues of the journal. When requested for a student accommodation from Accessibility Services, the amount used may include an entire book or more than two articles form a journal when a version in an accessible format is unavailable.
E-reserves will include the complete citation and the following copyright notice:
Any unpublished materials that are not the intellectual property of the requesting instructor will require the author’s written permission in order to be placed on reserve. Written permission should include the author's name, signature, title of the work, and the date permission was granted.
When use of a reserve item would no longer be considered Fair Use, the library will remove the item from reserve and, when applicable, request permission for use from the copyright holder.
The UCC Library houses the Early Childhood Education (ECE) collection of textbooks. These textbooks are grant-funded via the ECE program. These textbooks check out for one term only, and must be returned before new ECE textbooks can be checked out. ECE students who do not return these textbooks will be assessed a fee totaling the cost of the book and any associated processing fees.
Please see the ECE at UCC guide below, or contact the library staff directly if you have questions regarding these materials.
The library provides laptops to currently registered UCC students in for-credit classes only. Laptops check out for one term, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The library does not provide laptops for faculty, staff, or administrators. In the event that you are a UCC faculty, staff, or administrator please contact your department for access to appropriate technology.
The library provides calculators (graphing & scientific) to currently registered UCC students in for-credit classes only. Calculators check out for one term, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The library does not provide calculators for faculty, staff, or administrators. In the event that you are a UCC faculty, staff, or administrator please contact your department for access to appropriate technology.
The library conducts an annual review of all course reserve materials each summer. Materials will be returned to appropriate instructors/department/collections if they are no longer identified as being used. Library staff will make every effort to contact appropriate instructors/departments prior to removing materials from the library system.
Library staff will contact appropriate departments/instructors on a term-by-term basis to ensure that their items are appropriately represented. It is up to the department/instructor linked to the reserve materials to provide updated information to the library.
Please allow at least one week for processing of incoming course reserve materials.
