The Sue Shaffer Learning Commons and Library underwent a top-down remodel (June-October) in 2023. During this time the building was closed, the collections were boxed, and staff relocated to a computer lab in Wayne Crooch Hall. The building reopened mid-October, and a grand reopening was held on December 8, 2023. This remodel was made possible by a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Prior to this renovation, the library was largely unchanged since its construction in 1967. The newly remodeled facility now features state-of-the-art study pods, an Innovation room, a family-friendly study space, an upgraded tutoring center, and various other enhancements to support student academic success.
Sue Shaffer (1922-2017) was a transformative figure in the community who championed the belief that arduous work created a life full of rewards. She played a pivotal role in the 1982 formal recognition of The Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians by Congress. For over 30 years, her dedication to her tribe extended as a delegate for the National Congress of American Indians, the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, and the Indian Women's Leadership White House Conference. Additionally, she was a trailblazer as the first female chair of the Umpqua Community College board. Here, she was inducted into the Hall of Fame for her 17 years of service and was further honored by the renaming of the library in her recognition. Her relentless advocacy and leadership have left a lasting legacy in her tribe and the wider community.
The Sue Shaffer Learning Commons and Library is located at 1140 Umpqua College Rd., Roseburg, OR 97470. The primary entrance is located on the side of the building facing away from the parking lot.
