What It Is and How to Get Started

Tutoring at UCC is a personalized way to get academic support. Whether you're working through challenging coursework or just need help getting started, tutoring gives you the chance to work one-on-one or in small groups with someone who understands the subject and can guide you through it.

Unlike a classroom setting, tutoring is focused on your individual needs. You’ll get help that’s tailored to your learning style and academic goals.

Preparing for a Tutoring Session:

• Need help with homework or tough problems? Try what you can first, then bring your questions to your session.
• Struggling with course material? Review your notes and identify what’s unclear—your tutor can help you work through it.
• Not sure what kind of help you need? That’s okay! A tutor, instructor, or advisor can help you figure out where to begin.

Getting started is easy—just drop in or schedule a session through UCC’s tutoring services.

What You Can Expect From UCC Tutoring Services

We’re here to support your success. Our tutoring center is student-focused and committed to helping you reach your academic potential. Here’s what we offer:

What We Ask of You

Tutoring works best when it’s a partnership. To make the most of your session, we ask that you:

• Come prepared to share your thoughts and actively participate.
• Attempt your assignments before your session and bring specific questions or topics to discuss.
• Engage with your tutor—our goal is to help you get “unstuck,” not to re-teach the material.

The Tutoring Center maintains the right to ask persons who do not follow the UCC Student Code of Conduct and the library guidelines for use of library spaces to leave.

What Tutors CAN Do:

• Review and explain assignments.
• Facilitate understanding and utilization of textbooks.
• Clarify information presented by the instructor.
• Assist with review and edit of written papers.
• Give tips on studying and note-taking.

What Tutors CANNOT Do:

• Teach material that is (or isn't) presented in class. Peer tutors are not instructors.
• Write speeches or term papers for students. 
• Do students' homework.
• Contact instructors to find out what is being taught in every class.
• Give advice on anything other than what subjects they tutor. (There are other resources on campus we can direct you to if you need help with anything else.)

Tutors cannot help if you haven't demonstrated that you have put effort into your assignments. This could mean showing any form of effort in participating in the learning process that the tutors can use to build on what you have learned.

We would love for you to work with us! Tutoring jobs are paid positions available to students who show strength in the courses they would like to tutor. 

Tutors can be either Umpqua Community College students taking at least 6 credits each term or non students who can demonstrate their expertise in the subject matter they desire to tutor.. 

Preferred candidates demonstrate these additional qualities:  

• Interest in helping other students
• Willingness for personal growth
