Syllabus Language

AI Policy for Syllabus

Starting with Fall 2024, all syllabi will need to include an AI Policy statement specific to that course. Here are 2 statement templates for ease of use, but you may choose to write your own specific policy.

On the syllabus, your AI policy should be inserted after the Academic Integrity policy

Prohibitive AI Policy for Syllabus

(if you do not allow any use of AI)

Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) tools such as ChatGPT, MidJourney, DALL-E, etc. are not allowed in this course for any part of a graded assignment, including generation of ideas, writing of text, or rewriting a student’s own work. Violations of this policy will be considered academic dishonesty and could result in failure of the assignment or failure of the course. Different classes at Umpqua Community College may implement different AI policies. It is the student’s responsibility to conform to expectations for each course.

Permissive AI Policy for Syllabus

(if you do allow use of AI)

Certain assignments in this course will permit the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) tools such as ChatGPT, MidJourney, DALL-E, etc. Any GAI use allowed in this course will be discussed for each assignment that it is allowed. If you are unsure whether GAI is allowed for a specific assignment in this course, it is your responsibility to ask for clarification. Any such use must be appropriately acknowledged and cited. It is each student’s responsibility to assess the validity and applicability of any GAI output that is submitted, as AI outputs often include inaccurate, incomplete, and sometimes falsified information; students bear the final responsibility to ensure that their use of GAI is appropriate. Violations of this policy will be considered academic dishonesty. Different classes at Umpqua Community College may implement different AI policies, and it is the student’s responsibility to conform to expectations for each course.
