What's New at the UCC Library?

What's going on with all that noise? All that noise up in the Library? Up in here? Up in there?

As you may have noticed by now there has been a great deal of work happening around the Sue Shaffer Learning Commons & Library in the past few weeks. This work is necessary to kickstart the replacement of our aged roof. Additionally, it's the jumping off point for the larger remodel of the interior of the building. UCC has a Title III funded grant to redesign the space to provide a more welcoming, innovative, and collaborative space for faculty, staff, and students here on our campus. After multiple rounds of feedback from different constituents, the remodel is ready to begin!

Some of the main physical pieces of this redesign can be seen on the design plans below. Please keep in mind that this is a draft, and plans are subject to change.

Teaching & Learning Redesign plan

Upgrade One: The Entrance

A  redesigned vestibule with wall to wall black carpeting that will allow for a quieter, cleaner, safer space. Soft lighting that's bright and inviting.  The lockers will be repurposed elsewhere making room for more comfortable seating with places to plug in,  relax, eat, and hang out.

Upgrade Two: The Beverage Station

A swanky new ADA-compliant coffee bar with space for storage. All the beverages you love, none of the clutter we hate!

Upgrade Three: The Circulation Desk

A brand-new, ADA-compliant, highly-functional, circulation desk. There will be plenty of space to check out items, work with tech support, chat with our friendly staff, get recommendations, and pick up course-reserves.

Upgrades Four & Five: Enclosed Collaborative Spaces

Five fully-enclosed, sound-proof, ADA-compliant, office pods similar to the ones pictured below by Framery. Each pod seats 4-6 adults, offers privacy, glass paneling, window coverings, and can be configured in a multitude of ways.

Upgrade Six: Reference Services

A fully enclosed, private office for the Research & Instruction Librarian. This will allow the Librarian to have a quiet space in which to help students, faculty, and staff. They will be able to maintain a line of sight across the building to help ensure the safety of all.

Upgrade Seven: Teaching & Learning Lab

A  brand-new, state of the art conference-room style space with floor to ceiling walls. This room will be a collaborative space for faculty to meet and trial new software, hardware, and teach and learn alongside one another.

Upgrade Eight: UCC Online Entrance

A bold, reimagined entrance space with eye-catching colors, welcoming signage, and comfortable waiting area.

Upgrades Nine & Ten: Enclosed Study Spaces

Soundproof new study pods spacious enough for 2 adults. Similar to the larger ones on the opposite side of the building -- but cozier!

Upgrade Eleven: Tutoring Services

A brand-new home for a brand-new Tutoring Coordinator! Ample space to spread out and meet with students, faculty, and staff. Technological tools to help increase support services, and to increase success overall.
