The library is doing some springtime cleaning, and asks that you do, too! If you (or your students) have items that have been checked out from the UCC Library, please bring them back to us. We’re gearing up for a much-needed inventory of our collections and need to know what’s still outstanding (aside from our customer service, we know that’s outstanding! 😉).

Tutoring

Tutoring is still looking for more students who meet the following criteria to become a tutor:

Required Qualifications:

Be a current UCC student with at least 6 credits.
Maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher each term.
Earned an 'A' or “B” in the courses(s) tutored.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications:

Promote a positive, safe, friendly environment amongst students and staff of diverse cultures and educational levels.
Previous tutoring experience.

We are very much in need of Math and Nursing tutors for next term. We could also use tutors for Computer Information Science/Computer Science and Business.

Library

Have your students been struggling with citations? Are you sick of seeing them turn things in that have quite obviously come from EasyBib or another citation generator? The library provides you and your students access to an easy-to-use, high-quality citation management system called NoodleTools.

With NoodleTools you can create, manage, edit, save, organize, annotate, and export accurately formatted bibliographies in APA, MLA, & Chicago style!

The library is happy to announce the rollout of two new digital resources both made possible by a generous grant from the Whipple Family Foundation. UCC students, faculty, and staff now have access to streaming even more digital films via Kanopy and reading/listening to ever more eBooks and eAudiobooks with OverDrive. Both services are accessible through the UCC Library website, and via the Libby app. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements as the year goes on.

Kanopy is a video streaming service providing access to more than 30,000 independent and documentary films.

Tutoring

Tutoring has been busy, busy, busy! We are starting to get students that want to make regular appointments and are booking appointments on their own. This is exciting because I am now seeing a lot more statistics for tutoring and will be trying to track student success through tutoring a bit more. In the meantime, we’re just encouraging students to utilize tutoring and I am also trying to build up more tutors in subjects that are being requested.

Kudos to all our amazing tutors who are doing a great job of keeping students on track and reaching their academic goals!!

What's Happening in the Teaching & Learning Center: Winter Term, Week 2

Welcome to the Teaching & Learning Blog! We’re using this opportunity to share a bit more about the happenings in each department housed within the Sue Shaffer Learning Commons & Library.

Happy 2024! The library is happy to announce that we have expanded our hours to the following:

Monday-Thursday 7:45am – 7:00pm
Friday: 9:00am – 4:00pm

Tutoring

Tutoring Services is off to a great start! We decided to offer tutoring during Week 1 and it has been busy. I still need tutors, especially in math, sciences, engineering, CIS, and CS, to fill in the tutoring schedule and add to our offerings. If you know of anyone who might be interested or if you would like to recommend someone, please contact us at tutoring@umpqua.edu.

We are using a new tutor scheduling system which is linked on the tutoring website - https://library.umpqua.edu/tutoringcenter - just click the big green button that says “Tutoring Schedule Click Here.” The sign on is simple, it is linked to the single sign on through staff or student email and password. Once you register the first time, you can then just sign in and view the tutoring schedule for drop-in tutoring and/or make an appointment.

Another exciting new offering coming very soon will be year-round tutoring for middle school and high school students. I am working with Community Workforce Training and our tutors to offer this service to the community at a cost. I will put out more information when this is further into implementation, I am still working out the details.

A helpful tip for the start of term! If you don’t see one of your courses in your Canvas Dashboard, be sure to check your courses list and select the star icon to favorite the course so it displays in your dashboard. You can find instructions to do that by visiting Viewing Canvas courses in the Dashboard.

If you are having trouble viewing some of your courses in the Canvas Calendar, there is a similar process to ensure that all your current courses are being displayed. You can learn more about using the Canvas Calendar by going to How do I use the Calendar as a student?

Welcome to the Teaching & Learning Blog

We’re using this opportunity to share a bit more about the happenings in each department housed within the Sue Shaffer Learning Commons & Library.

It’s hard to believe that the doors of the Sue Shaffer Learning Commons & Library have only been open for three weeks, oh how time flies! What better way to kick off our newly remodeled space than with the inaugural blog post of this Teaching & Learning Hub!

It’s hard to believe that the Sue Shaffer Learning Commons & Library has only been open for three weeks, oh how time flies! There are so many amazing things happening that it’s hard for us to contain them all here in this one blog...which is why we have a separate blog for Library Happenings!

If you were in the library early this week you may have noticed 2 more 2-person study pods being installed. This means that we now have a total of 6 study pods.; 3 4-person and 3 2-person pods. These pods are available for students to use for up to 2 hours per day via our reservation system. In addition to using these study pods, students can contribute a name to our “Name a Study Pod!” poll. All appropriate name suggestions will be considered and added to a survey that will be shared campus- wide. Names will be unveiled at the grand reopening celebration on December 8, 2023.

Tutoring

It has been an exciting couple of weeks! Last Thursday in conjunction with UCC Online, Myles and I were able to implement a new resource for students. Therefore, we in tutoring want to make an exciting announcement:

Introducing the NEW 24/7 tutoring platform TutorMe

Just sign into your Canvas account and click on the TutorMe link in the left navigation bar. You can select to have a session with a live tutor 1 on 1 or submit a paper for feedback to the writing lab.

If you have any questions about how to get started or how to use TutorMe, please contact or see any of our tutors or myself, Karri Miller the Tutoring Coordinator. We can show you how it works, or I can send you training videos on how things in TutorMe work.

Students can still access our tutors on campus in the Tutoring Center on a drop-in basis or schedule an appointment through the Tutoring Calendar. I still hope to see a lot of faces in the Tutoring Center either for studying or getting some help from our amazing tutors.

Another exciting announcement for tutoring is that we will hold a student study event on Friday, Dec 1st, from 2:00-7:00 PM:

Fall Term

This is a fantastic opportunity for students to have some fun while having the opportunity to study with tutors for their final exams.

Making the switch to New Quizzes in Canvas has never been easier! New Quizzes migration during course copy/import has been enabled. If you want to make the switch from classic quizzes just check that box and Canvas takes care of the rest. Reach out if you would like more information!

You may have noticed that when trying to log into Canvas from the mobile app that you are rerouted to UCCOnline’s web page. That’s normal! Single Sign On (SSO) for Canvas is now functioning as it should be for the mobile app as you will now be prompted for your Microsoft credentials, unless you are already signed into your email, then you’ll just go straight to your Canvas dashboard. Oh yeah!

We have all worked hard to make this event and our tutoring program a well oiled machine and it is definitely to a point where I am now looking forward to adding more services and options for students to get the support and help they need.As we’re always looking for new ideas, I just this last week went to visit the Tutoring Center at Chemeketa Community College, who has the oldest certified tutoring program in the state. They gave me some great new ideas that I plan to implement in the next year (or two). As we move to do this, I will let everyone know. It was well worth the drive through the stormy weather to make that connection and tour their space. This rubric is what is used to ensure that all our online courses meet our standards and reflect up to date best practices. Invites will be going out shortly so keep a look out.Quick Canvas tip! Are you having issues with accessing third-party tools in Canvas like Panopto, Turnitin, or your digital textbook? Make sure you are not using a browser that has heavy privacy settings like DuckDuckGo or using a browser that is Incognito or Private Mode. This prevents Canvas from passing your authentication credentials to that third-party software and will block you from gaining access.UCCOnline will be hosting training sessions and workshops both in person and online in the near future.
